This essay was written with my friend Phil Neel in order to try and answer the question of how communism might actually work. We find existing attempts to do this largely unsatisfactory, chiefly for their refusal to engage with the material-productive reality of this world and the constraints this reality poses on building a new world.

We take production as our starting point and use it to critique the utopianism largely on offer by today’s forward thinking communists. From this we speculate with our own creative interpretation of how productive activity might possibly look under a communist society.

Special thanks to Endnotes for publishing this very large piece.
